Rip your DVDs for free
IMPORTANT: MacTheRipper free version does not work on Lion. However, the project has been continued as a paid version in the form of MTR which does work on Lion. You will be given the option to download MTR when you click download.
Although MacTheRipper's site has been shut down due to legal actions, the program still remains an excellent free DVD ripper.
MacTheRipper is perfect when you're looking to extract video from your DVDs, so that you can play them anywhere else. Although the interface will look a little confusing at first you should only focus on the 'Disc' and 'Mode' tabs. The first one allows you to select the regions you want the video to work in, and select which actions to disable while ripping your DVD.
The 'Mode' tab allows you to select your extraction mode, whether it's full disc, a certain chapter or a particular title. Once you're happy with your selection you just need to press 'Go!' and let MacThe Ripper do its work. The process is generally fairly quick.
If you want to update to a newer version of MacTheRipper, you'll have to sign up to the forum and follow instructions. It may not seem like the easiest way to do it, but at least it ensures that a strong community keeps it alive.
However, since version 2.6.6, MacTheRipper has been updated but the problem is that accessing the latest version (reported by those to have found it to be version 4) is quite a mystery. It seems that this has something to do with the legal status of the application and requires signing up for it via various forums. So while you might find that version 2.6.6 of MacTheRipper rips older discs fine, you might need the latest version to rip newer discs although good luck in finding it.
MacTheRipper is an excellent free DVD ripper for Mac.

A warning to potential buyers: The people who run the paid version of MTR are unscrupulous. After jumping through a LOT of hoops to acquire the version that works on Mac Lion (and forward) I had the app running beautifully for about six months before I had to purchase a new computer. Trying to get the team to respond to e-mails about getting a new license was impossible. They dragged the process out for over a month and then left me hanging after they said they would e-mail me the new license number. I've never encountered anything like this before. Really, really bad business. So, while I can review the product whole-heartedly, the people you have to buy it from are not trustworthy. Buyer beware. (PS: I am using dvdfab10 now. It does a comparable job.) More

Worth Paying! Has been worth it for years..
Paid version? makes total sense to me. Millions of people using a product that this person(s) developed and kept up-to-date by donation only. Mactheripper has been better than paid versions for years, and i believe the team deserves to get paid for their excellent work. I'll buy mine the next paycheck.Good for you, geezerbuttz (and development team... If you have one)! i hope all your work pays off well!"the workman is worthy of his hire."
Pros:
Simple
Handles different Region codes without having to change it on your system preferences
Cons:
Scene selection (or bookmark selection) More

Does not work on OSX Lion.
It appears that the new, free version of Mac The Ripper does not work on OSX Lion. I don't believe that there is an inherent issue with moving to Lion since the author has done it with the paid version. This is unfortunate. I liked the program up until this change in direction. More

MacTheRipper 2.6.6 is the best!.
...and when you think about that MacTheRipper 2.6.6 has not had an update in years speaks volumes about what a stable well written and user-friendly program it is! unfortunately I just upgraded to Lion and Lion does not support PowerPc applications. So I am shopping for a replacement however if you don't have Lion MacTheRipper 2.6.6 is the program to use to rip copy protected DVD's and not copy protected DVD's then use Popcorn or Toast to burn the folders onto a DVD or into iTunes or another app for playback.
